What is Pentecost?
Pentecost is a special day in the Christian calendar, occuring 50 days after Easter Sunday. In 2024, it falls on 19th May.
The background to Pentecost is useful to know. After Easter - when Jesus came into Jerusalem, had a fake trial and was crucified on a cross and rose on the third day - for 40 days Jesus was with his followers confirming his miraculous ressurection. Then he ascended into heaven telling them to go and wait.
Picture the scene - imagine being in a room with your friends, feeling both excited and nervous. Suddenly, a powerful wind blows through, and flames appear above everyone’s heads. You can suddenly speak languages you’ve never learned before!
The Bible puts it like this
When the day of Pentecost arrived, [Jesus' followers] they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4, ESV)
This incredible event happened to Jesus’ followers on the day of Pentecost. They received the Holy Spirit, which empowered them to spread Jesus’ teachings far and wide. Pentecost is like the Church’s birthday. It’s when the Holy Spirit came to guide and inspire Jesus’ followers.
The wind and flames symbolize the Spirit’s presence and power.
After Pentecost, the disciples boldly shared the good news about Jesus. People from different backgrounds heard and understood them, even though they spoke different languages.
This event marks the beginning of the Christian Church’s mission to share love, hope, and faith with the world. A mission which continues to this today, across the world and here in Elim Oasis.
We passionately believe the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit transforming broken people into disciples to serve the living Jesus. This is shown by becoming followers with love, gentleness and faithfulness (to name but three). More than that, to be empowered with gifts to administer, teach, heal and have wisdom (again, a short list).
Pentecost reminds us that we’re not alone. The Holy Spirit is our helper, guide, and source of courage. Pentecost is all about the Holy Spirit’s amazing gift to us.
